07 March 2015 - Cheesecakes and Cookies

Only 3 more months of this ! Having catered dinner is necessary as part of my accommodation plan. A lot of people said that it's stupid to make it compulsory for year 1s to have a part-catered plan and the food can be some sort of rubbish at times, and good some other times. The Swedish menu on Monday was splendid and made everyone wish that it could be Swedish day everyday.
But it was a rude awakening the next day when we had the same, old Sodexo food again T_T ! But the salad bar definitely improved so I won't complain too much. The thing is, the food is adequate most of the time, somewhat horrible sometimes and really good rarely.

Desserts are usually good ! BUT THIS WEEK. THIS ENTIRE WEEK, I HAVE BEEN EATING DESSERT THAT MY AWESOME FLATMATE, CAROLINE MADE.

The cheesecake was drizzled with strawberry sauce that I helped to make ! Caroline said that I was a good masher. -Bows-

She made this smaller one and it's quite cute really.

And that's Sam who is helping to strain out the mashed strawberry for the sauce. We have such good partnership really. And we didn't just stop at a strawberry sauce cheesecake. We had chocolate cookies yesterday and today, we are having a lemon cheesecake ! Excited ! I can't wait to eat it really.
I've been eating ALOT this week. Too much sweet stuff. There's the sweet treats I mentioned above and .....

8 tubs of ice cream - there's matcha ice cream, Daim (ABSOLUTE FAB), Oreo, Salted Caramel, Vanilla, Macadamia, Praline and Cream, and strawberry. TOO MUCH SUGAR IN A WEEK ! D: ! But yes, it was a good treat after doing some work with Sam and Nat at the Barn (what we call the new building, which was quite funny considering the fact that we are the school of Biosciences and the name they choose to give us was very fitting. Though everyone suggested alternative names like 'the Trough' since that's where we are being fed.). Working with Sam and Nat was so fun, even though I absolutely failed to write my essay.

Sam was testing my limits yesterday and I almost wanted to smack him in the head last night. Come to think of it, I did have a very exciting week. [But I am really exhausted by all the energy of the week.]

So on Wednesday, I went to Yorkshire with my president, Lisa, and Michelle, to visit our supplier SUMA for our Student Food Co-Operative's pop-up shop. Before I go further, I just want to explain what it is that we do.

The University of Nottingham's Sutton Bonington Campus which houses the School of Biosciences and the Veterinary School is located in the countryside. It takes 5 mins to get into the Sutton Bonington Village and 30 mins to Kegworth. So you get the idea. We are basically in a food desert - which means that it is a region or part of the countrry where there is a lack of fresh fruit, vegetables and other healthful food, due to the lack of grocery stores, supermarkets and other food providers within a certain radii of the place, as according to USDA.

But yea. So if we want food, you either catch the bus from campus to the main campus and then catch another bus to enter the city on weekdays (the hopper bus on weekends goes straight into the city). That takes about an hour. Or you rely on online grocery shopping.

What Sco-Op (which we are affectionately known as) does is that, we buy cheap, organic produces from suppliers and then sell it to the students at no profit. Yeap, that's right !  We are non-profitable. We sell at the price that we buy ! You can also request for special items and we can help to bring them in when we make a new order ! We usually have tea, chocolates, tinned items, dried fruits and nuts, rice, cous-cous, etc. We don't only have food items, but also shampoo and conditioner (that I am using right now, they are SLS- , Paraben-free etc.) as well as lip balms.

It's a great society to be part of and Lisa is absolutely amazing at this. Anyway ! I have more photos of SUMA but I don't know what I can show and what I can't .... so enjoy the look of their pantry/canteen where they get a free meal per day, and they can help themselves to the tea, drinking chocolate and sandwiches etc.

SUMA is a worker's co-operative which means that everyone are paid the same and you can take up to 1 year of unpaid leave to go travelling and still come back to a job, you can also do job rotation etc. Which I think that it's really amazing ! They do exports to all over the world and I was surprised to hear that Singapore was on the list ! And their pay was quite high ! The recruitment notice stated £30,200 for a year ! And this is a company where everyone's voices are heard. Big decisions are made together by voting and consensus etc. I was just blown away by how this company work !

It was a very enriching 2 hours visit where we went to all the different departments etc. Michelle was so excited and we could tell that she really would love a job here.

As a parting gift, we got the catalog for March/April. They showcased their new products and there's articles about recipes etc. I like this really and when I was flipping through it, I saw so many things I want to buy ! And their rice are really cheap..... Might ask Mike to help me do some personal order :X !

We came back quite late and so Sam offered to cook me some food, YAY. So I came back to dinner waiting for me - cries tears of joy - And then we went to play pool. It was a very silly game of pool. We had a round of normal pool, a round of left handed pool, a round of backhand pool and another round of normal pool. I swear that he's getting so good at pool, it's not funny anymore. I used to wipe the floor with him but now ... I lost so many games to him T_T

Our afternoons are usually like this. Him on the other sofa with his pillows, and me on mine with my pillow. It's funny how we have a default setting when we are in the living room.

On a side note ....

It's nearing Easter and just like Christmas, it's a huge thing in the UK and that is when you see all sorts of treats filling up the promotion aisles in the supermarts. The Malteaster bunnies are so good I swear. But the Lindt Easter Eggs are the best.

My kitchen cupboard is so full right now but I went ahead and bought new seasoning. Kind of regretting right now. OTZ. Oh well, I could certainly finish all these in 3 years ....

Lunch was stir-fried chicken with onion and rice vermicelli. The rice vermicelli was adapted from a recipe by JustOneCookBook. This website is filled with so many good recipes ! I really love it ! Lunch was so good.

AND I BOUGHT NEW BRAS ! Omg, I'm so happy to finally get new bras after getting poked in the chest by the underwire. I bought a wrong size for my knickers. Sigh. But well, bigger is better than smaller I guess? AND THEY ARE SO COMFY. I'm going to wear them tonight. Who cares about washing until you wear them ?

Okay, this is longer than I had expected.
