23 April 2015 - Sophie's Hobby

Everyone would probably have some kind of hobbies throughout your life time. Some a bit more normal, some a bit more special/extreme. My hobbies are very mundane, very normal as we say. It's just reading, painting, writing, soap making and collecting art supplies (which is a post for another time).

And Sophie, another first year Microbiology student, has hobbies quite similar to mine. We both draw and paint (I would say that she's better at both than I am) and she collects rocks (her collection homg). But one that I didn't expect, or rather, had never encountered, was postcard collecting.

I mean, stamp collecting, yea, heard of and my mum/sis used to collect them. But I was quite intrigued by postcards collecting. I do collect new postcards from my travels but she collects old postcards, sent and received by people. She's usually going onto Ebay and antique shops to grab hold of those postcards. Usually they range between £1 - £4. (I did ask Soph if I could blog about it with the pictures she sent me and she told me it's okay!)

The one that got this whole money burning hobby going on was this. A postcard from a pair of lovers that eloped together to this place in Scotland where you don't need parents' permission to get married. So yes, guess who got married then ! She bought this because she thought that it was cute. BUT HAHA, GUESS WHO GOT MARRIED TO THIS HOBBY.

That postcard got the whole collection of old postcards going and in Soph's words, "It sounds weird but they have cool messages written on the back. IT'S INTERESTING." So from that one .... It became:

And then the other day, she sent us this picture in the group chat, going a little ballistic. Reason being ... She found an old postcard of our campus from 1940's ish. And all of us went WTF because ... believe it or not ... our campus STILL looks like this, albeit with colours rather than black, white and grey.

Another interesting one, because ... it's totally coded and no one knows what is being written down, except for the one who sent it and the one who received it. Pretty cool. It's like, you don't even know what kind of secrets are hiding behind the codes.

And then she showed me a series of really cool postcards, which incidentally, are her favourite kinds to come across ! She's only got 3 of them and then went on to explain why on Earth she loves these so stupidly much.

"In 1893, People don't have their own cameras so when they go on holiday, they could send postcards to their family to show where they've been" You lift up the flap and ....
A STREAM OF PHOTOS COMES OUT. Apologize for the blurry photo that's giving me a headache, and hopefully, not you too.

Apparently, the oldest postcard she got on hand is one from 1903. And on one of these "lift-flap-photos" postcard, she got one with stupid puns like feeling crabby! [I suppose it's the crab one above]

LOL. I totally get why she would love collecting these treasures. But erm, I think our collecting hobbies are interfering with the progress of actual revision because last night, she sent me a link of an ebay listing of an old postcard which is something like an antique meme and very excitedly/agitatedly told me that it's an antique meme, how can she not. look at it, in response to me asking her to get her head back into the books.

Alright, now that I've got this done, I should hit the books as well ! :3 Can't wait for everyone to be back !
